Women’s Cascade HELLY TECH® Waterproof Low Cut Hiking Boots
By Anne Egan
First things first, the Cascades immediately strike a clever balance between lightweight trail shoes and more traditional hiking boots. They are clearly designed for people who want the agility and comfort of a trainer while retaining enough stability and weather protection for serious day walking and mixed terrain, making them perfect for paddlers on the move.
Lightweight
What stood out to me first was how light they feel. Many waterproof hiking shoes can feel stiff or excessively engineered straight out of the box, but the Cascade manages to avoid that. At around 350g per shoe, they feel noticeably lighter than many conventional hiking boots.
The overall design emphasises comfort and mobility. Helly Hansen uses its HELLY TECH® waterproof membrane, combined with a relatively flexible upper construction, resulting in a shoe that feels far less restrictive than heavier leather alternatives. The cushioning is particularly good underfoot thanks to the HH® Max Comfort insole and HH® Power-Stride midsole, which provide a soft but supportive feel over distance.
On uneven terrain, the Cascade performs confidently. The HH® Max-Grip outsole and Surround-Grip traction system provide reliable grip across muddy paths, and watery riversides. While they are not aggressive mountain boots intended for technical scrambling, they inspire plenty of confidence on typical UK trails and coastal paths. The shoes also feel surprisingly stable, given their lightweight build, thanks to the HH® Arch-Brace support system and reinforced heel structure.
Waterproofing
Waterproofing is generally very good under real-world conditions. Wet grass, muddy tracks, shallow puddles, and steady rain were handled without issue. Like most low-cut waterproof hikers, however, there are functional constraints. If water enters above the collar, the waterproof membrane obviously cannot help much. That is a compromise shared by almost every low-cut waterproof hiking shoe rather than a fault specific to the Cascade itself. Discussions within hiking communities regularly highlight the trade-off between low-cut flexibility and full weather protection.
Breathability is also respectable for a waterproof shoe. Many waterproof membranes can leave feet feeling overly warm during faster walking, but the Cascade remains relatively well ventilated thanks to its lighter synthetic construction and HH® Max-Vent system. During changeable UK weather – in which conditions can move from damp mornings to surprisingly warm afternoons – that balance works particularly well.
Comfort right out of the box is another major positive. The padded collar and flexible upper mean there is very little break-in period required. That alone will appeal to casual walkers and occasional hikers who do not want to spend weeks softening stiff footwear before longer outings. Several reviewers have also noted that the fit feels secure without becoming overly narrow or aggressive.
Visually, the Cascade sits somewhere between outdoor footwear and modern trail trainers. Depending on colour choice, they look technical without appearing overly rugged or heavy. That makes them flexible enough for everyday use and hiking. Interestingly, discussions online suggest many women appreciate brands offering more muted or practical colour options in hiking footwear, and Helly Hansen’s darker Cascade variants help avoid the overly bright styling often criticised in women’s outdoor gear.
There are limitations. While the support is excellent for a low-cut shoe, it still cannot match the ankle protection and load-carrying stability of a proper mid or high-cut hiking boot. If you regularly hike with heavy packs or tackle steep, highly technical ground, you may want something more substantial. Likewise, although the grip performs well overall, very slick descents on wet rock can occasionally expose the limits of lighter hiking shoes compared to heavier mountain footwear.
Overall, I found the boots impressively well-rounded. Their biggest strengths are comfort, low weight, and versatility. They feel ideal for UK day hiking, coastal walks, woodland trails, travel, and general outdoor use, where conditions are unpredictable, but outright mountain-boot rigidity would feel excessive.
For paddlers seeking a lightweight, waterproof hiking shoe that remains comfortable over long distances without sacrificing much stability or protection, the Cascade feels like a very sensible, highly wearable option.
