There are certain pieces of kit that I always want close at hand on a paddling trip, and a decent headtorch is firmly on that list. Whether I’m unloading boats after dark, finding my way around a campsite or dealing with an unexpectedly late finish on the water, good hands-free lighting can quickly become essential. The SILVA Seek 450 Recharge is a compact headtorch that delivers plenty of useful light without adding unnecessary weight or complexity.
At just 69g including the battery, it is very light and pleasant to wear. The slim 25mm headband is comfortable and, more importantly for me, easy to adjust, and the lamp is small enough that I barely notice I’m wearing it. That’s great around camp, where a headtorch can stay on for hours.
Despite its compact size, it delivers an impressive 450 lumens at maximum power, with SILVA’s Intelligent Light combining a longer-reaching spot beam with a wider floodlight. I found this particularly useful outdoors, where I could see what was immediately around me while still having enough reach to pick out the route ahead.
It has three brightness levels: 450 lumens on maximum, 200 on medium, and a very useful 10-lumen low setting. Maximum provides up to three hours of light, while that low setting stretches battery life to an impressive 90 hours. For most everyday camp tasks, I rarely needed full power.
The red-light mode is another feature I appreciate. It provides enough illumination to find equipment inside a tent or check a map without destroying your night vision – or dazzling everyone else around you.
Charging is surprisingly simple via USB-C, so I can top it up from the same power bank I already carry for other electronics. There’s also a lock function, preventing the irritating discovery that your headtorch has switched itself on inside your kit bag.
For paddlers, the IPX5 water resistance is reassuring. It will cope with rain and splashes, but remember it’s water-resistant, not designed for immersion. I also like that the lamp unit can be detached from the headband and attached to other equipment, adding another layer of versatility.
Overall, the SILVA Seek 450 Recharge is light enough to disappear into a pocket, with a powerful beam for most camping and paddling situations, and I’m not cycling through endless settings when all I really want is some light. For night-time launches, expedition camps, or simply finding the car after an evening paddle, it’s exactly the dependable little headtorch I would be happy to keep in my paddling kit.
