Red Equipment Adventure Waterproof Backpack 30L

I have been looking for a good, strong, waterproof backpack that is not too big, not too small, that I can use for a weekend away to store my tech equipment and keep it dry and dust-free, or on my paddleboard. I came across the Red Equipment 30L Waterproof Adventure Backpack, which has recently been upgraded. Long before I was an Ambassador for Red, I was a big fan and owned plenty of their well-designed and beautifully constructed kit.

My favourite colour from the Red Equipment collection is Olive Green, so it was my first choice, and as soon as it was unpacked, I realised how robust it was. The size is perfect for a weekend away or as a daypack. The removable padded laptop sleeve also makes it great for daily commuting.

There are two stretch-mesh external pockets, waterproof and watertight stash pockets on the outside, and an integral emergency whistle cleverly housed in the front buckle. The backpack also features highly reflective detailing and a bike light loop, ensuring you are seen in the dark.

In terms of protection, this is a pack you can trust. Built from recycled 420D nylon with a double-sided TPU coating, it is fully waterproof and resistant to scuffs, tears, mould, and oil. The reinforced base adds durability where it’s most needed, while the roll-top closure with side clips creates a secure seal that keeps water firmly out. Cleaning is simple – a wipe down with warm, soapy water is all that’s required.

It is also very comfortable to wear, even fully loaded, with comfy, breathable, ergonomic back padding and improved foam shoulder straps.
So, how has it fared during my use? My first trip was to the beach; my large Red water bottle and a coffee flask fit nicely in the two stretchy external pockets, and the pack was certainly big enough for a picnic and camera gear. It was comfortable to wear and easy to use the roll opening at the top, and there was no danger of water or sand getting in.

My next trip was overnight and again, plenty of room for clothes, toiletries and a laptop, which was well protected in the padded sleeve. Once at my destination, I was able to repack the backpack and visit a show, with plenty of room for any shopping. The pack also has a great grab handle, so you don’t have to wear it on your back all the time.

Next, off for a paddle; I took the backpack and stuffed it under my bungy straps – again, I had water and coffee flasks, a snack or two and spare clothes, just in case the weather changed. It worked perfectly, and everything stayed dry and protected. Walking down to the water’s edge, I generally find it helpful to have a backpack – instead of a drybag – especially when carrying my board and paddle. Great for portaging too! If you were hiking or paddling, and had an emergency, this is where you might need that hidden whistle – it’s so unobtrusive – a clever design feature.

The Red Equipment Adventure Waterproof Backpack 30L is a highly capable, well-executed piece of kit. Comfortable, genuinely waterproof, and thoughtfully detailed, it bridges the gap between adventure pack and everyday backpack. For paddlers, coastal walkers, and outdoor travellers who want one pack that does it all – this should definitely be on your wish list.
