Do Blue book review

By Nick Hounsfield & Abby Richardson

Have you noticed how paddling always leaves you deeply relaxed? Or simply feel better sitting by the side of a river or on a beach? Are you interested in the science behind it and why water has such an impact on our wellbeing?

If so, then you will enjoy Do Blue – Water, Waves and Wellbeing by Nick Hounsfield and Abby Richardson, published by Do Books, 16 April 2026.
An uplifting and informative book, Do Blue sets itself apart by weaving together science, practical tips, memoir, and stories of inspiring people committed to making the ocean more welcoming. In addition to exploring our connection to water, the authors provide actionable steps we can take to protect the oceans that give us so much.

The writing is engaging and relatable, and as with all the Do Books I have read, it also has great photography and a really useful reference section so you can research further.

With case studies from swimming, surfing and fishing, the research will also be of interest to those who love paddlesports.

As an author, I also love how Nick and Abby bring their personal, unique perspectives to the book.

Nick, for example, has always had a strong relationship with water and waves since childhood. It is where he feels most alive and, as he says, ‘most me’. This is something I think many of us can relate to. Nick realised his dream of creating an inland surfing lake, The Wave, in 2019. In February 2020, however, he suffered a stroke at the age of 46. The water played a huge part in his recovery – initially by simply cleaning the lake through the pandemic when it had to close. He attributes much of his recovery and rehabilitation to it. “Gently held by the water, surrounded by blue, I started to heal,” he writes.

Abby Richardson has loved being by the water all her life. Swimming or being in it, however, scared her. It wasn’t until she was in her forties during the pandemic that she found a love of immersing herself in the cold water. There she found her reset, “My moment of peace amid whatever life throws at me,” she writes.

Together, their different stories bring passion to sharing the power and joy of water in Do Blue.

It’s the kind of book you can pick up and read for a few minutes to give you a nudge of encouragement to get outside for your own wellbeing, become an ally to help others access the ocean or do a beach clean. Its size and price would make it a perfect gift for a friend or indeed yourself!
