Kosi Pogies
Pogies usually maintain warmth and dexterity during winter touring and long crossings. However, this review will be divided into two parts. The second later in the year for the winter variety; for this review, we look at the Kosi short marathon style, which protects the hands from harmful UV rays in the summer.
Before I start, a little information on where the gloves are made. Rosie Baird manufactures each and every pair on her vintage Singer Treadle Sewing machine from her home in Scotland, which, in my opinion, makes them pretty unique!
The first thing I noticed when fitting the pogies to my paddle was just how lightweight they are, with a wonderfully minimal feel. Once attached, they almost disappear, allowing me to maintain a natural grip on the paddle without feeling as though I am wearing oversized gloves.
The design is refreshingly straightforward. They attach securely around the paddle shaft, creating a pocket for your hands while still allowing you to quickly remove them if required. This is particularly useful when paddling in changeable conditions, where you may need to adjust equipment, grab a drink or handle a camera without having to completely remove a pair of gloves.
What impressed me most was the balance between protection and freedom of movement. The pogies provide a welcome barrier against harsh U rays, and we’ve had plenty of them in the 6/7 weeks! My hands retain the tactile feedback and control that comes from paddling with a bare grip.
The UV-resistant fabric is another thoughtful touch. Paddlesports equipment spends a lot of time exposed to sunlight, whether stored on deck, carried on the bank or left between sessions, so protection against UV degradation should not be overlooked. It adds confidence that the pogies will continue to perform season after season.
After using the Kosi Lightweight UV Resistant Pogies, I found them to be one of those small pieces of kit that make a surprisingly big difference. They are easy to fit, comfortable to use and take up virtually no space when packed away. For touring paddlers, sea kayakers and anyone who finds cold hands limiting their enjoyment of winter paddling, they are a simple and effective upgrade that deserves a place in the kit bag.
