Palm Wave Sneakers

For paddlers in the UK, footwear is rarely optional. The cold water, uneven launch points, and the realities of year-round use make grip, protection, and comfort essential. The new Palm Wave Sneaker enters this space as a lighter, more flexible option than traditional neoprene boots. It translates the performance DNA of the popular Gradient boot into a trainer-style shoe. This version is aimed at warmer months and multi-activity use.

Both of our first impressions were immediately positive. The Wave Sneaker takes clear cues from the Gradient 3.0, particularly in the robust lower construction, but swaps out the higher cuff for a low-cut design that sits just below the ankle. This makes a noticeable difference in mobility and comfort, especially for longer days or mixed activities. A standout addition is the integrated knitted sock collar, which does an excellent job of keeping out grit, stones and general debris – something anyone who has stepped off onto a pebbly shore will appreciate.

Palm balances technical performance with modern style. The Wave Sneaker comes in two bold colours: Mandarin (Sarah), a bright orange matching Palm’s recent gear, and Pine (Dale), a subtle teal. Both options are stylish enough for everyday wear, highlighting the shoe’s versatility beyond paddling.

Underfoot, the Wave Sneaker really distinguishes itself. The Vibram Idrogrip sole – shared with the Gradient – offers exceptional traction across a wide range of surfaces. Whether scrambling over wet rocks, negotiating slippery logs, or moving across muddy banks, the grip inspires confidence. Importantly, this traction doesn’t come at the expense of board feel. The sole protects against sharp or uneven ground while still allowing enough sensitivity for effective paddle control, avoiding the disconnected feel that some thicker soles can sometimes introduce.

Comfort is another strong suit. Straight out of the box, the fit is impressive, thanks to a lightweight upper and a well-cushioned interior. The inclusion of two interchangeable insoles is a thoughtful touch, allowing users to fine-tune the fit depending on conditions. For example, sizing up to accommodate drysuit socks in winter can be offset by the additional insole during warmer months, when thinner socks – or none at all – are used. This adaptability makes the shoe suitable for a broader range of paddling scenarios than you might initially expect.

The lace-up system is simple but effective. The laces are durable, long enough to achieve a secure fit, and remain reliably tied during activity. Combined with the snug sock collar, the overall fit feels secure without being restrictive. Additional practical details, such as pull tabs for easy on-and-off, reinforce the sense that this shoe has been designed for real-world use.
