Mustang Survival Adelphi UV hooded top
Mustang Survival, a Canadian brand with over 55 years of experience producing high-quality life-saving solutions and apparel, crossed the pond in 2022 to open a business and development team in the UK and an e-commerce store to serve international customers.
They are fast gaining a reputation with UK followers for their highly technical and comfortable kit for the watersports industry, with a crossover to stand-up paddleboarders being high on their agenda.
I am lucky enough to have some of Mustang’s kit, and it is beautifully made and does what it says on the tin, so I was happy to have the opportunity to test out their UV hooded Adelphi top. I had heard great things about this from Skip Innes and Craig Sawyer, who had both worn this top on their epic Yukon 1000 challenge, and it came out as one of their favourite items of technical clothing.
I have recently started embracing colour, so I was delighted that Mustang sent over Pebble Grey and Bluefin. I love both colours—cool and classic vs. tropical pop! They are two different sizes, too, so I can give you a heads-up about that.
This has become my go-to paddling and casual top because of its great comfort and UPF 50+ protection. It is also easy to pack and sling on and has wicking and antibacterial properties. I love the thumbholes for keeping the sleeves in place if necessary, and it’s great for layering, too. There is also a small hidden pocket on the back hem to hold cards and keys.
The super-soft fabric is made from 100% recycled Polyester and performs when wet or dry. Designed to protect you from the sun, this extends to the hood, which gives you that extra cover. I recently went for a paddle on a cool, sunny day, and the top performed well – we had a typical English shower; I popped up the hood and felt protected until the squall passed. Out came the sun; the top dried off quickly enough, and I could comfortably continue my paddle. With any technical apparel, you don’t want to think about it when you are wearing it – no adjustments, no fiddling – just wear and go. This is that item. It also washes like a dream and is quick-drying, so I’m always ready for my next day out!
Sizing: I have the Bluefin in medium, and it fits like a dream—I am a 10/12 UK size. The Pebble Grey is large and certainly does not come up too baggy, but it would easily fit a size 14. The size chart on the website has very accurate measurements.
