Isle Gateway waterproof backpack 25L
I have many drybags, some of which can be used as a backpack, but I have not yet owned a dedicated waterproof backpack – so, many thanks to the American company Isle Surf & SUP for allowing me to review theirs.
This backpack has been designed to be used on and off the water, so it is the perfect size for use as a commuter backpack or deck bag for day trips on your board or boat. It feels very robust and is made from 600D waterproof fabric with TPU coating, which is sturdy and durable. It has RF welded seams throughout, so it looks neat and tidy, too.
It has a smart grey vibe for commuters, and inside, there is a dedicated padded laptop sleeve with a Velcro strap to keep it secure. My 14” MacBook Air fits very nicely in the sleeve but can take up to a 16” laptop. The main compartment has two more inner zip pockets and a large external water-resistant front pocket. The main waterproof zipper has a strong toggle attached for easy opening and closing, and when fully closed, the bag becomes water and airtight. The zipper is at an angle around the top of the bag, meaning it doesn’t flop open when you open it. It’s great when it rains, and you want to keep your kit dry.
The shoulder straps and back of the backpack are well padded with breathable air mesh, and the bag sits comfortably on your back, even when full or heavy. The shoulder straps are fully adjustable and have an attachment point on each, and the chest strap is adjustable and removable. There are multiple lightweight-load carrying webbing straps on the front and side of the backpack, which you can use to attach accessories, together with a small carry handle at the top of the backpack.
If you own an Isle SUP board, you can use the dedicated connector straps to attach the bag to it; otherwise, it will fit neatly under the bungees of any other board.
All these features mean it’s an easy crossover from commuter bag to deck bag. This is an excellent size for a day bag, and after some testing on and in the water, I can say it’s definitely watertight. When covering SUP races live from a small boat, I often have a kit that needs to be kept safe and dry, and I think the Isle Gateway will come into its own for that.
Smart, durable, beautifully made, and well thought out – I like it a lot.
