Exploring the Lake District

During the summer, a Paddle UK team was sent on a mission to the Lake District to experience the wonderful trails on offer to paddlers.

They explored Windermere, Coniston, Ennerdale and Wastwater, to produce guides for everyone to try. Check out the videos on Instagram and YouTube (@PaddleUK) to discover what you’ll find on the trails, along with tips on where to get in and out of the water.

Windermere
Windermere is England’s largest lake at 18 km (10.5 miles). The lake is hugely popular, and can be busy with boats, ferries, and other paddlers, but that will not stop you from having a wonderful time taking in glorious views of the surrounding fells.

Coniston
The Lake District’s Coniston Water is the third-longest natural lake in England. The delightful trail takes in views of the famous fell, the Old Man of Coniston, and the island which features in Arthur Ransome’s Swallows and Amazons.

Ennerdale
Ennerdale Water is a truly wild location, so as you can expect, there is no lifeguard supervision or safety cover on the lake. Take care as you paddle across this peaceful and tranquil lake – a remote hideaway from the rest of the bustling Lake District.

Wastwater
The glacial lake of Wastwater in the western Lake District is England’s deepest. It is surrounded by wild beauty and towering mountains, including Scafell Pike, which provides a stunning backdrop to a serene looped trail.

Time: 1 hour
