The Boathouse Launches Wonky Boats Initiative to Support Grassroots Paddling and Sustainable Manufacturing
The Boathouse — home to Silverbirch Canoes, Hou Canoes and Tootega Kayaks — has launched the Wonky Boats Initiative, a long-term programme designed to support grassroots paddling while reinforcing the group’s sustainability credentials.
Across its brands, The Boathouse operates rigorous quality control standards. Occasionally, structurally sound and paddle-ready boats are retired from retail due to minor cosmetic imperfections. Historically, these boats were recycled in line with environmental policy.
Now, where appropriate, The Boathouse is choosing reuse over recycling.
Through the Wonky Boats Initiative, these boats are repurposed and donated to clubs, schools, youth organisations, and community projects working to increase access to paddlesport across the UK.
“We build boats to last, and we’re unapologetically strict about quality,” says Steve, co-founder. “That means sometimes retiring a boat for something cosmetic. Rather than cut those boats up, we’re choosing to put them back on the water — where they can still make a difference.”
The initiative runs on an ongoing basis, with applications reviewed periodically as boats become available. Youth access projects are prioritised, with appropriate safeguarding in place.
